The ŽIVO! project is being implemented with the financial support of the European Regional Development Fund through the Operational Programme Slovenia-Croatia 2007-2013.
The ŽIVO! project builds on the objectives achieved as part of the KUP project, with the wider partnership structure and greater focus on establishing adequate monitoring of the quantity and quality of water sources of the Slovenia and Croatia border area.
The basis for the sustainability of the implementation of such activities in the border area is dedicated equipping of the Science and education center Speleo House in Vodice, which was established after the completion of the reconstruction of the old school as part of the KUP project.
In addition to the organization of the Center, the ŽIVO! project includes a series of scientific studies on both sides of the borders. The scientific part of the project is being delivered by the Slovenian partner, the Karst Research Institute at the Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU) from Postojna, which together with other project partners - Faculty of Civil Engineering of Rijeka and the National Laboratory of Health, Environment and Food from Koper, ensures the implementation of the necessary hydrological measurements, chemical and microbiological analysis of water and sediment, and speleological, biospeleological and ecological explorations if the selected sources and sinkholes as well as the karst pits in their hinterland on the Slovenian and Croatian side.
Scientific studies provided new knowledge and information on the state of the karst region of Istria, and the findings are summarized in the monograph intended for the general public, which is a good basis for planning life and water management in karst regions, and the dissemination of knowledge on waters in karst areas.
